Dear Facebook, please buy Nokia
Nokia's stock continues to fall. I know what you're thinking? When you leap from a burning platform, isn't there an actual physical iimit to your velocity as you hurtle towards the icy waters below?
Apparently, no.
MeeGo, as far as Nokia is concerned, is dead. Symbian, as far as Nokia is concerned, is scrap; and the company is just seeking a good price for someone to take it off their hands. The deal with Microsoft is *still* not signed. There is no Nokia Windows Phone. There is a very good chance there will be *no* Nokia Windows Phone in this, the year of our lord, 2011.
And all the cuts have not been made. All the divisions have not been merged. The true, actual tally of how much those northern Europeans are going to force poor Nokia to actually have to *pay* people they are getting rid of, remains a mystery. Though we should expect, given their nanny state mentality, that it will be about $100,000 per cut staff, *on average*. Fuck, I've run out of asterisks this is so bad.
And guess what. Only the bad stuff is what is happening now. And only the bad stuff is what is gonig to continue to happen at least thru spring and into summer. Only bad. Meaning that Nokia's stock price is likely to drop even further. The company is barely worth $30 billion.
Now tell me: wouldn't it just be fucking awesome if someone swooped in and purchased Nokia -- that is *not* Microsoft. Seriously. How fucking awesome would that be? And even though they don't play with actual money, Facebook could come up with that, right? Sure, they won't. They will just fuck around with Android and have any number of handset makers build Facebook phones. Still, they could make it work. Facebook is about the most popular app on the mobile web. When you look at what Facebook offers, social media, plus sign-in, check-ins, status updates, recommendations, integration with contacts, with pictures and videos; obviously it requires the mobile web to thrive.
And with Nokia they get maps, which would put them on a *collision course* with Google in the global smartphone wars. Remember, Google only offers Android, only allows Android to survive, to evolve, because it supports the ad business. A Facebook phone, with the software, the platform, the features, the maps, the hardware would be the single biggest threat to Android. In every single market and for every single users.
Plus, Nokia has 10 years worth of smartphone patents, mobile web technologies, global presence.
It would be fucking awesome, no doubt. Everything they need to do battle with Google. While blindsiding Microsoft and leaving them dumbfounded. And two years behind. Not to mention the potential of a Facebook smartphone ecosystem that offers a level of integration with the planetary social graph and each individual's fully digitized social mobile local breadcrums would be a direct challenge to Apple.
Come on, Facebook. Do it. Do it!
